When you’re looking for a bite to eat or a midweek takeaway treat, you’ll want to make sure you’re eating at the cleanest establishment with the most hygienic practices. In England, it’s not a legal requirement for a business to display its hygiene rating from the Food Standards Agency. However, the FSA strongly advise it.

Food Hygiene Ratings are a way for the Food Standards Agency to regulate businesses where food is supplied, sold, or consumed including restaurants, pubs, takeaways, food vans, stalls, supermarkets, schools, hospitals and more.
Food safety officers will inspect a business against a set of criteria including food handling, building and premises standards, and procedures and knowledge. The inspector then will then award the business a rating from zero to five, with zero at the bottom and five being the highest. If a business doesn’t reach the top rating, the inspector will tell the business what is needed to reach the top score. For more information about the Food Hygiene Rating score, read our blog post.
